Denny Hamlin Wins The Daytona 500

It is Hamlin’s first-ever Daytona 500 win, and the closest win in history.

Denny Hamlin has won the Daytona 500, edging Martin Truex Jr. by inches at the finish line. It was the closest finish in the history of the event.

Hamlin gave Toyota its first Daytona 500 victory and owner Joe Gibbs his first win in “The Great American Race” since 1993. Hamlin was running fourth on the final lap before making a strong move to the outside, nudging teammate Matt Kenseth and then powering by Truex.

My middle son Erik is a huge Denny Hamlin fan, so he’s freaking out a little. I promised him the Hamlin flag will be on the flagpole all week to celebrate.

  1. I have friends who are thrilled with this. I think the news said they finished within 1/100th of a second of each other. Makes for a great race finish!

  2. Yeah, .011 seconds apart. It was amazing. Erik is still on Cloud 9 of course. We met Denny’s mom at a race in Dover a few years back. She was working in the souvenir trailer and came out to say hello to him, take a picture, and gave him a free Denny Hamlin 1:64 scale car.
