Four Score

auston-matthewsToronto Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews scored four goals in his first NHL game last night, setting a league record.

Auston Matthews scored four goals in his NHL debut in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ opening-night game Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators. His goals accounted for all of Toronto’s scoring, as the Leafs fell to Ottawa 5-4 in overtime.

“I couldn’t believe that was happening out there,” Matthews told The Associated Press after the game.

Matthews, a 19-year-old from Scottsdale, Ariz., was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in June’s draft.

Yes, Matthews scored all of the Leafs’ goals, and yes they still lost. To his great credit, Matthews was rather subdued in post-game interviews, even blaming himself for the loss, since the man he was covering scored the game winner. This kid is going to be a superstar, and like most NHL players, his ego is firmly in check.

  1. Good for the kid. Luckily Toronto’s basketball and baseball teams are good, cause the Leafs suck big time. Don’t get to see them that much anymore since they are no longer in the Western Conference.

  2. The Leafs are gonna be good. Just not this year. They’ve got a lot of young talent which will make mistakes from time to time, and not a lot of quality veterans.
