Agent Zero

The United States Secret Service, once the bastion of honor and professionalism, has “misplaced” thousands of property items in the last fifteen years, including laptops, vehicles, and weapons.

“This is supposedly an elite law enforcement agency — how did all this equipment get stolen?” or lost. “This is alarming. Every American should be alarmed about this,” Judicial Watch’s Irene Garcia told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Secret Service agents reported 11,780 lost or stolen assets between fiscal years 2001 and 2016, according to the data Judicial Watch received, although the agency didn’t distinguish between lost and stolen items.

A total of 121 “weapons/pistols” were lost or stolen from 2001 through 2016, including 69 in 2002 alone. The Secret Service also reported 736 cell phones, 571 badges and six vehicles as lost or stolen in that same period. (H/T – Al)

So the organization charged with protecting the most powerful man in the world cannot even protect a Lincoln Town Car. That is less than reassuring.

  1. FD – Sheer stupidity?

Mike – Yeah, he wears an overcoat, and whispers, “Psst, hey buddy, ya wanna buy an armored limo?”

Metoo – Trump said he was going to install a government hiring freeze, and cut the waste by attrition. Good idea.

  2. I worked in CA state government 10+ years, and became aware that some employees relied on very lax investigative practices of the State to fill their garages with “borrowed” stuff. One BIG problem was the lack of comprehensive inventory policy and practice. You can’t accuse a thief if you can’t prove loss.

  3. Based on my experience with a large State Agency in a very large state, I bet a lot of the stuff that is “missing” is in back rooms at remote offices or was actually disposed of but not properly recorded. When I got promoted, I inherited an inventory list from my boss that had retired. There still digital cameras on there that used floppy disks. And a couple satellite phones that I had turned in paperwork twice on to show they had been transfered to another district.

  4. I work for a National company and its amazing how easily some things flow. Being new; Im just taking it all in for now, but life may not be so easy for either me or them, but I promise I will follow the correct path.

  5. Mike47 – That’s the problem’ proving the loss. It’s an issue here, too.

Ingineer – That would explain most of it, but the guns trouble me. Crap like that needs strict oversight.

Edward – It’s all you, and any of us, can do.
