So Senseless

A search has been initiated to find the body of a man who jumped off the Grand Canyon Skywalk this weekend. The man allegedly climbed over the barrier and leaped to his death for reasons unknown.

Authorities are trying to locate the body of a man who climbed over a safety barrier at the Grand Canyon Skywalk and apparently jumped to his death.

They say the 28-year-old visitor to the tourist spot on the Hualapai reservation outside Grand Canyon National Park jumped around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Skywalk opened in 2007. It’s a horseshoe-shaped glass walkway that juts about 70 feet over the canyon overlooking the Colorado River. Signs warn tourists not to venture too close to the edge as a vertical drop from the Skywalk is between 500 feet and 800 feet.

I don’t understand this. I mean, dealing with depression, I get how people have these thoughts, but often times these victims are inconveniencing those left behind. Forget the man’s family for a minute, but consider the rangers and search crews who have to trek into the Canyon, find the body and transport it back to the access roads. It’s just so selfish.

  1. “… consider the rangers and search crews who have to trek into the Canyon, find the body …”

And consider the condition of your body when they find it. From someone who has done recovery of this sort, it isn’t pleasant. And yes, I tossed my lunch. Underwater.

  2. TXNick – Floaters are the absolute worse. My first sic years were in a district bordering the Delaware River. Yeah, it’s awful work.

I looked at the skywalk, and my only conclusion is… NOPE.

  3. A friend of a friend killed themself by laying on the railroad tracks. They left a note apologizing to the train crew and the people that had to clean it up. I guess better than nothing but still a selfish act in the end.

  4. Back from another successful adventure to the desert southwest. Successful because I’m not dead.

Coming back to this kind of story is no fun. Last summer when I rafted the Grand Canyon, I remember floating under the Skywalk. It was a LONG way up to the top. The guy was flying for quite awhile before he landed. Nasty all the way around.

As for least favorites, mine were those who sat in their car and carbon monoxided themselves to death. Very nasty way to go. Suicide is a terrible thing, but as terrible as it is, the biggest thing is the selfishness of the person doing it.
