The port of Beirut suffered many casualties after a small explosion triggered another, more devastating one, leveling buildings and sending a shock wave through the city.
A massive explosion shook Beirut Tuesday, killing at least 50 people and injuring thousands of others while flattening much of the port, damaging buildings across the capital, and sending a mushroom cloud into the sky.
The cause of the explosion remains unclear. The Lebanese Red Cross tweeted that more than 30 teams were responding to the scene of the blast via ambulances.
Well, they think they know the cause, and it’s as idiotic as you’d expect.
Abbas Ibrahim, chief of Lebanese General Security, said the explosion might have been caused by highly explosive material that was confiscated from a ship some time ago and stored at the port. Local television channel LBC said the material was sodium nitrate.
Apparently, Beirut confiscated a shipload of ammonium nitrate – about 2,750 tons of it – and let it sit inside a warehouse… for twelve years! Well, there’s your boom. Dumbasses.
You can see a few angles of the explosion below…
…
When Mrs. Earp showed this to me I thought it was an airstrike.
What surprises me is that the article implies that hezbollah “unofficially” controls the port. If they really did have control, I would have thought they would have smuggled out the confiscated material years ago for use in their other terror operations

Loki – Unless they were planning a huge attack? But even these morons have to know that stuff is unstable, right?

You never know. Every so often you’ll hear of them blowing themselves up on accident.

If I had to guess what caused that explosion in Beirut, I would guess that munitions were stored in that warehouse, possibly missile components & they were taken out by someone with good intelligence, who did not want to see them used against them. That’s my story, I’m sticking to it.
Of course, hypothetically, it would be hard for Lebanon to accuse someone of blowing up their missile depot without admitting that they had a missile depot…
So, fertilizer explosion it is!

Mike – It would also be embarrassing for them if a certain country’s military destroyed the stockpile by, um, accident. Couldn’t admit that and lose face with their Islamic brothers.

Speaking of embarrassing situations, it seems the Iranians sunk their own aircraft carrier (the one they built to play war games and looked like a small Nimitz carrier).
