Ground Control To Starship SN9

On Tuesday, the unmanned SpaceX Starship SN9 was attempting to land back on Earth when things went… awry.

SpaceX Starship SN9 exploded yesterday while attempting to land and Cosmic Perspective captured the whole thing in slow motion.

High-speed cameras were rolling during the SpaceX Starship SN9 test flight in South Texas. For this mission we positioned a camera focusing exclusively on the landing pad to capture all the action during the last few moment of decent. The rest was history.

This is truly incredible footage.

The video is below the fold, if you’re interested. And the Starship was unmanned.

  1. I’d like to thank Elon Musk for providing me with some great entertainment. I always liked watching big explosions.

If you find the version of the video where the SpaceX guy doing the comms is talking, he makes really great comments that I can’t really remember, but I do remember laughing my ass off. His description of the “vehicle” exploding was classic.

  2. Check out thesilicongreybeard’s blog. He says someone on Twitter asked Musk why didn’t fire all three engines prior to touchdown, then shut one off of there were no failures? Musk says, “Because we were dumb.” That kind of honesty is refreshing.

And if remember right, the explosion was described as a “rapid, unplanned disassembly.”
