Going Walkabout

I know Mondays are my heavy day, posting-wise, but I needed to add something to the already clogged schedule; namely, I’m less fat.

Every year around the holiday season I don’t walk/jog as much as I should, and usually eat all the wrong things. Then when it gets warmer, I have to play catch-up. On January 1st, I was a disgusting – to me – 212 pounds. I decided to get back to cutting carbs and exercising. Amazingly, I was still in decent jogging shape, and by March I was hitting fives miles in under an hour.

Slowly, the weight was coming off, and my doctor said I looked slim. (I’m not, but it was a nice thing to say.) My goal was to get below 190 pounds by the summer, and at least look halfway decent for Kyle’s graduation. Yesterday, I jogged six miles and averaged the first five in 11 minutes and four seconds. My cardio is getting better and my stamina is improving.

This morning I stepped on the scale and saw a beautiful number: 189 pounds.

Hopefully, I can lost another ten and get under the 180 mark.

Tastes Great, Less Fatty

Back in April, I noticed my winter weight turned into an uninvited spring guest. While politely asked it to check out, it refused, and wanted to stay for the summer. At the time of Julia’s Holy Communion, I was a portly 212 pounds (at five feet, nine inches). It was time to start walking/jogging and getting reacquainted with Doctor Atkins.

The first few weeks were awful. I cheated on my diet like she was Hillary Clinton, was walking a mile at a terrible (for me, at least) fifteen-minute pace. But, like Lieawatha, I persisted. In the five months since, I have exercised almost every day – including the day last month when the heat index was 112 – and have walked/jogged a total of 229 miles. My best day has been walking/jogging five miles in under an hour, a feat I have done thrice this summer.

The payoff has been worth it. I am fitting into size large t-shirts, my pants are loose, and last week, my scale read a pretty respectable 188 pounds. That’s a net loss of, like, 67 pounds. Or kilos, or whatever. Of course, the cyst removal will cut exercise short for a week, but I’m liking the less-fat me, and while the weight will most definitely fluctuate, I want to keep myself under 200 – at least – for the future.

Don’t be fooled; it’s a lot of work, and there are times when I’d rather stay in bed, but I’ll be fifty next year, and I’d like to spend my golden years in better health.

P.S. – I’m still ugly as sin, but that cannot be fixed by jogging. I tried.

DMX Saved My Life

Monday was in interesting day. After coming home from a long day at work (actually, it was still just eight hours), I had to do the backyard weed-whacking (cutting the weeds, not shooting them with an Italian-made .22). It was a hot day, 88 degrees to be exact, and when I was finished with the lawn, I was drenched with sweat and exhausted.

But I hadn’t walked yet, and since I’m back religiously on Atkins, I wanted to get in the workout.

Since the orthopedist says I can’t jog anymore, I have settled for walking. The first three miles were sweaty, but pretty easy. After I finished the third mile, something broke. My body seemed to lose all its energy and my legs got rubbery. Unfortunately, I was still a mile or so from home, and Mrs. Earp was taking Kevin to karate.

I had to suck it up. I pushed myself to get back walking when DMX’s “X Gon Give It To Ya” queued up on my phone. It’s one of those songs which gets my blood pumping, and has been a mainstay on my workout list since I heard it used in the Deadpool movie. I immediately felt better, clicked the repeat button on my phone, and it helped me get home without dying.

So, rapper DMX saved my life – kinda sorta – with an assist from my shuffle button. The only explanation I can think for the breakdown is I’m back on Atkins, and when I was on it last time, I had two days where I felt awful before leveling out.

If You Can’t Take The Heat…

In the continuing effort to keep rockin’ my smokin’ hot bod, I went for a walk after work yesterday. Temperatures were in the low 90s, so I kept the walk/jog to three miles. (I only jog the hills.)

I was maintaining a decent pace, and after my first hill jog, I started to feel… uneasy. I’ve been walking for a while now, and the three mile trek I was on usually takes me less than forty minutes.

Yesterday was different.

I was sweating more than normal, but I brought a bottle of water to keep cool. About a mile and a half in, though, my stomach started to hurt. A lot. I felt like I was going to simultaneously barf and break into the poops at the same time.

What’s The Skinny?

As you know, I am recovering from abdominal surgery. (You know this because I have been beating the issue like a rented mule in a pathetic cry for attention.) Any hoo, the surgery frakked up my tummy, er, gut, er, crap factory, and while most of the weight I lost by ditching carbs is still gone, my stomach is still a little distended and I gained a few pounds.

I’m currently sitting at 190 pounds, which is what I weighed in the police academy 22 years ago. I know I can lose ten more pounds, but I still think I look horrendous. Not that I ever had a flattering opinion of myself. Yesterday, however, I was in classroom training, again, because all Philly cops do anymore is eat donuts and receive classroom training. The class was “Tactical Medicine,” and the department was instructing us on many live-saving instruments like combat gauze, Israeli bandages, and Nasopharyngeal airway tubes.

None of which the department owns, or dispenses to its officers. So… yeah.

We did get retrained on the tourniquet, an item we were actually issued, so there’s that.

We break for lunch and I run screaming toward the parking lot anticipating an Arby’s roast beef with a side of cyanide. I finished the written test – yes, shut up – first, so the lot was mostly empty.

Except for this female officer.

This girl is walking toward me, and I immediately think to myself, “Damn, she’s pretty cute.” She gets closer, and I think, “Wait, I know her, don’t I?” As she reaches me, I realize it’s Lisa, a cop who worked in my division and married one of my coworkers. Very pretty, nice as pie, and a good cop.

Lisa walks by me and I smile. She stops, looks at me, looks again, and says, “Wyatt, is that you?” I smiled and said yes, slightly offended she didn’t recognize me because of my morbid obesity. Her jaw drops, and she exclaims, “My god, you’re unrecognizable!”

(Yes, it’s not my fault I’m fat and ugly; blame my parents and salt ans vinegar potato chips.)

But, but, that wasn’t it at all…

“You look great! I didn’t even recognize you with all the weight you lost. How much are you down?” I told her as of today’s weigh-in I am down 22 pounds, and she replied, “Well you look great. Really, really great!” before running to her class.

As I continued the walk to the Wyattobile, I started getting stabbing muscle cramps. Something was wrong with my face, and I thought I was having a stroke. I didn’t smell toast, so that couldn’t be it. Something odd was definitely going on, though, because my mouth was going into spasms, turning upward beyond my control. My teeth started to show, and my eyes became three sizes larger.

I grabbed an instructor to see if he could explain this phenomenon to me, and he said, “Dude, that’s a smile.”

A smile? Hmm, never heard of it.
